I think the crisis has changed the way people think.  I think we are going through a multi-stage transformation.  It is quite impossible to defend with a straight face the view that you can drown the government in a bathtub, and the view that the private financial markets are stabilizing and that they can be freed from regulation.  Now seen properly, this is comparable to the view that you can run a nuclear reactor without a cooling system.
