Submission Guidelines

Please become familiar with our magazine before submitting your work. Our archive is a good place to start.

Please send submissions of poetry, criticism, reviews, essays, or fiction as Word attachments to Note the genre of the piece you are submitting (e.g., “Criticism”) in the subject line. If you would like to propose a piece for development, please write “Proposal” in the subject heading. Do not send more than one piece at a time.

Note for poets: Our two poetry reading periods run from August 1 to September 30 and from Feburary 1 to April 30. Poems submitted outside of these dates will not be considered. Please send at least two, but no more than four, poems.

The Straddler does not consider previously published work. We will read simultaneous submissions, but please let us know upon submission whether a piece is under consideration at another venue; if it is selected for publication elsewhere before we have responded, we request that you notify us promptly.

Contributors retain most rights to all published pieces.  However, The Straddler retains the right to maintain pieces in its archive, and to subsequently republish pieces in any derivative form (e.g., in an anthology). We also require that The Straddler be given prominent credit in the case of pieces subsequently published in print elsewhere. Except in rare instances, The Straddler does not permit pieces to be republished in other online venues.

Please send scans, and a brief description, of your work to We are interested in all forms of visual art, and will even consider photographs of installations if the presentation is compelling. The simultaneous submissions guidelines we ask writers to follow also apply to visual artists. Rights arrangements are worked out on a case by case basis.
